One of the easiest ways to protect yourself is to wash your hands with soap and warm water to get rid of any harmful germs. You should do this throughout the day. In order to prevent the spread of infection it is especially important to wash your hands before touching food, after taking out the garbage, after using the restroom, and after touching objects that have been used by multiple people (such as computer keyboards, library books, office chairs, grocery carts, and restaurant salt and pepper shakers).
It is also important to limit your exposure to the flu virus by not sharing objects that may easily become contaminated. For example, use your own pen to sign checks. Don't drink out of another person's glass or share a friend's hair brush or lipstick.
Wipe down your cell phone and all mobile devices at least once a week using the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Also wipe down your personal office space, doorknobs and car steering wheel. When spending the night in a hotel room, wipe down the phone, alarm clock, and television remote control.
Try not to touch your face with your hands. Viruses can be transmitted through contact with the eyes, mouth, and nose.
Eat a variety of healthy foods and try to get 8 hours of sleep each night. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals required for a healthy immune system. Your entire body will be stronger and fight off infection better if you receive enough rest.
The flu vaccine cannot protect against every influenza virus, therefore whether or not you receive the flu vaccine, the above precautions will greatly lessen your chances of catching the flu.
Complications associated with the influenza virus can include pneumonia, sinus infections, high fever, and ear infections. Young children, senior adults, pregnant women, and individuals with asthma, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions are at greater risk for developing complications when exposed to the influenza virus.
