Construction
There are four types of woolen rug construction. A rug pad is recommended for all wool rugs. If the intended use is over carpeting, a multi-purpose rug pad is recommended.
Hand-knotted
In a technique that has been handed down from generation to generation, yarn is wrapped and then knotted around each warp thread. Each yarn is then hand-cut and hand-tamped to form a tightly constructed pile. This time and attention to detail by expert craftsmen creates a beautiful rug that has a lasting value and presence.
Hand loomed
A variety of looks and textures, from luxurious shag rugs to versatile, cotton rag rugs are achieved with the use of a loom. A combination of colours and yarn thicknesses are intricately hand-woven to create contemporary or traditional designs. Each step of construction is hand-finished by skilled artisans.
Hand-tufted
With the aid of a tufting tool, yarn is passed through a frame-stretched fabric backing on which a pattern has been drawn. Both cut and looped piles are achieved through this process. Tufted rugs are backed with latex for stability, then with fabric for a finished look. Skilled tradesmen complete each stage of the process.
Power-loomed
This is an efficient machine-made way to loom a variety of textures at a low cost. Power-loomed rugs are usually synthetic and can include cut piles, rib patterns and other weaves.
All carpets and rugs have some sort of backing. Carpet backing systems contain the following elements: a primary backing, a chemical adhesive, and often a secondary backing. Whether a carpet has a secondary backing depends upon the end use of the carpet and the location of the installation. Carpet for high performance end use generally has a primary backing and a secondary backing. Carpet for low traffic areas may have only a coating of latex, a secondary backing or a cushion attached to the primary polypropylene backing.
Wool shaggy rugs were all the rage in the seventies and these days area wool rugs are just as popular for every room in the home. Rug care is determined by size, construction, and material. Care for large-size area rugs as you would wall-to-wall carpet.
To keep your area rugs wool or acrylic in the best condition you need to vacuum regularly. Blot spills immediately with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Spot clean or shampoo with a mild detergent. For best results, periodic professional cleaning is recommended by most manufacturers. It is better to keep the more expensive woolen rugs for places such as the bedroom, the guest room or the drawing room as these places are not used as much as other rooms.
