Shedding The Coat
Jack Russell terriers have three distinct types of coats. These coats are referred to as smooth (where the fur is short), broken (where the fur is a bit longer), and rough (where the fur is rather long and scruffy). All types come with dense, coarse hair and a double coat, and the truth is that you can expect Jack Russell terrier shedding with all of them.
Don't think that having a short haired variety will get you off the hook either. Shedding is inevitable with any type of coat and probably even heavier among the shorter haired varieties.
Maintaining Order
Here are a few facts to be mindful of. The predominate color of Jacks is white, so be ready for white fur to cover the house. Also, because their fur is so course it tends to cling wherever it lands, meaning that vacuuming might take some time.
Of course, regular vacuuming will help, but if you want to make sure you've caught as much hair as possible then you might have to intensify the cleaning regime. Try keeping a thick roll of tape around to strip the coarse hair off of the floor and furniture and keep things cleaner. There are of course specific contraptions that you can buy that perform the same function, but if you want a cost-effective method then tape will work just as well.
Grooming Is Key
Grooming is not optional, but total necessary. This is one of the best ways to keep the Jack Russell terrier shedding issue under control, because the more hair you catch with a brush the less will be strewn over the carpet. They'll need regular grooming to keep their coat in top condition, and using a bristle brush or rubber mitt will be ideal as they'll be able to catch more of the hairs.
Normally a basic level of hygiene is enough, but if your dog has really coarse hair or a coat that is rough or broken, you might have to give them more attention. Some coats will need professional trims to maintain control, while some owners get stripping combs to tend to dead clumps of fur. Don't think that a bath will do the job of regular grooming - of course, they'll need to be bathed a few times a year when the coat gets dirty, but doing it too much could lead to skin irritation and it won't help the Jack Russell terrier shedding issue at all.
Simply put, all dogs shed, including the Jack Russell. Their white hairs can get everywhere so it may not be ideal for people that like to keep a totally spotless home, unless they like crawling around with tape at all hours of the day. Shedding happens and owners need to be ready to do some grooming and vacuuming, which are small prices to pay for the amount of enjoyment your Jack Russell will add to your life.
