Physical Check-up - Every week or perhaps before everytime you use your vehicle if time permits, check the car battery. Is there any corrosion in the terminals? Are the battery fluid still adequate? Does it have a stinky smell?
Corrosion - If you notice some white powder in the terminal, it may be indicative of corrosion, this will give you problems in the future such as the car suddenly dying or a difficult start-up. Get a metal brush and some buy some corrosion prevention spray from your nearest auto parts store. Disconnect the battery wires, remember, disconnect the negative(black) wire first, and make sure they do not touch any metal part of the engine so it does not short-circuit. Remove all the corrosion with the metal brush, you can make it easier by pouring some hot water over it, brush it, then clean it thoroughly with cold water after. Once you have removed all corrosion, re-attach the wires, this time, positive(red) first.
Fluid Level - Since most car batteries have translucent body, checking the fluid level is fairly easy. You can also check by removing the cover, old batteries used to have detachable covers but now they have been permanently sealed. There are some mechanics that can replace car battery fluid, otherwise you would have to replace the battery itself.
Bloated - If the battery is bloated it means that it has already degraded, this may usually be seen in low quality car batteries, it can also be caused by extreme heat. This generally decreases your battery life, like in cellphones, and will mean that the car would not run long. Replace it right away.
Smell - This could indicate a leak, it may also cause corrosion in the terminals of the battery. But if it comes from another part of the battery, you need to replace the battery.
Test it - Test the car battery by starting up your car. See if the start-up is fast and smooth not cranky. See the engine lights if the car reports any problems too.
Old Age - If you generally have been driving under safety measures and have never exerted your car to extreme conditions then the only problem you'll be facing is the battery's life cycle. They usually last around 3-5 years depending on the manufacturer. If it reaches it's end of service then you certainly have to replace it.
That sums up the common problem's we deal with on the road and in our garage, if you experience other problems however you can always approach your local autoshop to help you with it, and learn more about it.
