The holes shouldn't be too tight or too lose, or you risk reducing your control over the ball. You might also bring along some textured tape for the thumb hold to help your grip improve. When you've chosen a ball, lift and try it to be sure it's the right one for you. Make sure you have your own footwear. Sure most bowling alleys will rent shoes to you if you are just a casual bowler. However, if you intend to spend quite a bit of time bowling then you should really consider getting your own shoes. With your own shoes you will be guaranteed excellent arch support and perfect comfort throughout your bowling game. Shoes that don't fit well will end up being uncomfortable and you will be distracted and not bowl as well.
Taking some time to get your shoes ready is a good idea as well; just use a wire brush on the toes and heels. This helps decrease your likelihood of sliding around as you bowl. Yet another determining factor is the force you put behind the ball when you release it. Quite a few people really get some weight behind the ball when they throw it. Only using a little strength is better for other bowlers. Some bowlers find that if they don't put a lot of weight behind throwing the ball they have better control over how the ball travels down the lane.
