When Mark Delaney and his wife Cathy packed up and left Brisbane in 1995, they did not go for something more spacious or luxurious.
The couple moved to the slums of Delhi.
\"We live in a small place with no fridge, no washing machine, no running water,\" Mark said . \".
Our electricity is illegal.
Yeah, very simple.
\"The purpose of this trip is to continue for a few years to give them an idea of the needs of the wider world.
But Mark and Cathy have been livingand-
In the slums of India since then. The pair —
Their two sons, Tom and Oscar, grew up in a slum in Delhi.
Switching time between India and Australia.
Mark said he found it difficult to adapt to some cultural differences, but he already understood the reasons behind them.
\"A large number of people are competing for scarce resources --
Think about queuing up in front of the tap or pushing on a crowded bus
\"That means people can be very aggressive,\" he said . \"
And \"The nature of the Grade\"Indian]
Society based on caste, color, language, gender [and]age\".
This is very obvious in the slums, Mark said, and it is difficult to \"see that those\" small \"people are often abused by those at the top \".
Mark noted that his Christian faith is one of the main reasons behind radical change.
\"I\'m learning the law, I\'m having a problem in my life, and I think, \'there are a few roads in front of me,\'\" he said \'. \".
\"I can go the normal way and be a lawyer. . .
Or I can take a look at the wider world around me and see what needs there.
\"I chose to go this way.
\"In India, Mark is a non-
Government organizations to help \"the poor gain legal rights \".
\"Roughly speaking, Indian society is divided into about 80 s,\" he said . \".
20% educated, English
All kinds of things can be accessed.
Not only did Mark choose to give up international wages, but he chose to give up his income altogether.
\"I was not paid at all.
\"I am a volunteer,\" he said . \"
\"We live on our own savings and friends and family will give us money to stay there.
\"Growing up between the two cultures has had a profound impact on the couple\'s children.
The oldest Tom in the boy has a vivid memory of the Islamic Eid
Adha, often called Bakra Eid in India (\"Goat Eid\"). \"[During]
That festival . . . . . . Thousands of goats were sacrificed in our community. [It]
I was very impressed as a 10 or 11 year oldyear-
\"Old,\" he explained.
\"Goats are pets in our family.
I have already photographed the goats and played with them.
Until this festival . . . . . . They were all slaughtered one day.
After that, Tom became a vegetarian.
\"In Australia, you really don\'t know where your meat came from ,[so]
\"It is likely to be imagined that it is not actually an animal,\" he said . \".
If you feed it and shoot it, then you know where your meat comes from.
Tom believes that the positive side of his growth is far greater than the negative side.
He said: \"I am very honored to have friends in India and Australia, and . . . . . . There is a broader and deeper understanding of different issues . \".
\"No matter where you are in the world, you miss something else.
I think the cross
Cultural upbringing cannot make up for this.
Father Mark said that after years of living between the two worlds, he felt that he was neither a \"complete Australian nor a complete Indian \".
\"I have a lot of good friends in India, lovely network, very satisfactory work,\" he said . \".
\"But when I walked out of the House, my friends and neighbors and I looked different, so I got all this attention and it was difficult as an introvert.
\"Living in India has consolidated the concept of sustainable living for the Delani people.
When they returned to Australia for a long time in 2014, they experienced a reverse culture --shock.
\"We have been reading newspapers . . . . . . Climate change seems to have become a very, very serious problem;
It may be a problem for our generation . \"
\"We believe that Australia is one of the highest carbon footprint countries in the world, but]
They know science and are educated. of course everyone will try to reduce their carbon footprint.
According to Tom, this is a good example of extreme inequality in global resource allocation.
\"The world is limited and we enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in Australia,\" he said . \"
\"I think that what Australians are getting is more than just the basic requirements, which in fact denies others the possibility of achieving the basic requirements.
\"The carbon budget is a good example, and we contribute more than we deserve.
\"According to the data from the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, Mark and Tom calculate that the sustainable carbon emissions per person are about 2 to 3 tons per year.
According to the climate committee, Australia currently emits an average of 22 tons of carbon.
7 times higher than the sustainable average calculated by Delaneys.
Mark and Tom are trying to persuade Australians to cut carbon emissions.
Mark said that while Australians \"raise their arms\" and think there is almost nothing to do is tempting, this is not the case.
Change doesn\'t have to be as extreme as packing and moving to India.
One simple action, Mark says, is from \"our busyness --
Think about what is really important in life.
\"The average person would say, in fact, the important thing in life is relationships, being able to enjoy nature, creativity, and so on,\" Mark said . \".
\"These things don\'t require much carbon,\" he said, so giving priority to them will help reduce a person\'s carbon footprint, even if it\'s just a little bit.
There are also some small and practical changes that can help reduce your carbon footprint over time.
\"Maybe from eating five times a week to three times a week,\" Mark said . \".
\"Maybe it means you work five days a week instead of driving to work, it\'s four days. \" Topics:human-
