how chlorinated swimming pools can trigger asthma, ruin teeth and turn hair green

Nothing is more attractive than swimming in the pool in the summer. But be warned.
Some health experts are concerned that swimming in a chlorine pool can be the source of some serious health problems.
For more than 100 years, chlorine has been widely used in the UK and most other developed countries to disinfect our water supply.
Dr. Nitin Seetohul, a chemical analyst and forensic toxicology expert at Nottingham Trent University, said: \"When added to water, chlorine is very effective in destroying a wide range of dangerous water --
The spread of bacteria and viruses is widely believed in developed countries to eliminate diseases such as typhoid and cholera.
\"In the drinking water recommended by the World Health Organization, 1 or less per million is considered completely safe --
Only when chlorine is added at a higher level of 2 to 5 per million can the pool be kept clean and the problem seems to be present.
Dr. Andrew Wright, professor of dermatology at Bradford University, said he was not surprised to hear that 33 people were rushed to hospital last month after an accidental excess of chlorine at the Wild Duck Holiday Park swimming pool near Greater Yarmouth, because the swimmers there are breathing and vomiting.
\"I have been trying to change the way we keep the pool clean for the last 25 years,\" Dr. Wright said . \".
\"I often see people having serious skin problems due to normal chlorine levels in the pool.
Many of my patients can\'t go swimming because the water in the chlorine pool will dry the skin and will seriously stimulate eczema.
\"There are other ways to disinfect the pool more gently --
For example, ozone filtration, including the passage of oxygen through water in the form of ozone gas, and then filtration.
\"In fact, the problem is not the chlorine itself, but the chemical --products -chloramines -
This occurs when chlorine is combined with dirt found in the pool and nitrogen in debris, such as skin particles, sweat, urine, bacteria and body oil.
Dr Wright added: \"These toxic substances
The product that sends this signal
We are linked to the pool and have problems.
\"The stronger the smell, the healthier the pool may be.
Take a shower before swimming and remove any cosmetics, dry skin flakes, hair products and body wash.
These residues can also react with chlorine to produce chloramine stimuli.
Unless you are particularly sensitive to chlorine, occasional swimming is unlikely to cause too much damage.
But experts suggest that anyone who swims for a week or more should be vigilant.
Belgium\'s 2008 study published in the European Journal of breathing suggests that children who swim once a week in a chlorine pool are five times more likely to develop asthma than children who never swim in the pool.
Another recent study of 50 outstanding athletes published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that almost all swimmers they examined had lung inflammation, the person who spent the most time in the chloride pool changed the most.
Children are considered to be particularly at risk because they tend to spend more time in the pool than adults and are more likely to drink water.
\"Although more research is needed, it is believed that chlorine and chlorine are-
\"When inhaling or swallowing, products can attack cell barriers in the lungs and protect them from allergens,\" Dr. Wright said . \".
This is why some experts believe that continuous exposure to chemicals in cleaning products (such as chlorine) over the past 50 years may also be responsible for increased allergies.
It was also found that poorly maintained chlorine swimming pools also resulted in \"rapid and excessive\" erosion of the teeth of keen swimmers.
Dr. Leila Jahangiri, clinical associate professor at the New York School of Dentistry, recently issued a warning to people with swimming pools at home, reminding them to pay close attention to chlorine and pH.
\"If the chlorine content is not properly maintained, the pool water may become too acidic,\" Dr. Jahangiri said . \".
\"When you swim, frequent contact with this acid water can cause serious enamel erosion.
\"Some people\'s eyes are more sensitive to chlorine than others, but in general, if the water in the pool is more chlorine, five or more parts per million, it will play a stimulating role, \"said Dr. Seetohul.
Conversely, bacteria persist if the chlorine content is too low.
Then, when the cornea is flooded and its protective tear film is washed off, the eyes are vulnerable to bugs.
This may cause mouth inflammation.
Dr. Seetohul said yes, dyed blonde hair will appear green after soaking in the chlorine pool, but the color is not from the chlorine itself.
\"Copper in the color of the hair reacts with chlorine, making the hair green.
\"If your hair starts to look a little green after swimming a few times --
Try to neutralize chlorine with a vitamin C spray, or rub a tablespoon of ketchup with wet, freshly washed hair.
Leave for five minutes and rinse clean.
The red paint helps neutralize the green. -
