Compared with most other metal materials processing, titanium processing is not only more demanding, but also more restrictive. This is because the metallurgical properties and material characteristics of titanium alloys may have a serious impact on the cutting action and the material itself. Various characteristics of titanium make it a powerful part material, but many of them also affect its machinability. Titanium has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and is typically only 60% denser than steel. Titanium has a lower modulus of elasticity than steel, making it harder and more flexible, and its corrosion resistance is better than stainless steel. These characteristics mean that titanium will generate higher and more concentrated cutting forces during processing. It is easy to vibrate and cause tremors when cutting; it is also easy to respond to the cutting tool material when cutting, and then aggravate the crater wear.
